View Full Version : Capitalization (God vs god)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_(word)

while both terms are acceptable when describing a "diety", "God" is mostly used in monotheistic religions, whereas "god" is used where more then one god fits in the religion.

the "problem" i have is, all along faq, we use "God", while accepting more then one god.

-----quote from faq----
There are other search engines using similar techniques as Google, are they Gods as well?

The short answer is yes, but to a lesser degree. Google is the best at what She does and therefore the most powerful of the Gods.
-------------------------

imo, we should lowercase all references to God except when in regards to christian God or other monotheistic God's.

its just my opinion tho, woudnt want any religios fanatics shooting bibles at us and screaming "You may have your god, but WE have God!" or some other variation.

lazy.

I honostly don't think it would really create a huge difference. There's going to be tards who don't like using the shift key, then there's going to be the generally confused that will capitalize everything they see fit.
If we all read it the same, what's the big deal? x.x

its nice to be accurate;)

and yeah, idiots will roam the earth as long as humanity is on the planet. theres no escaping that. its more as when reading God, first thing that pops into mind is the christian/islamic/other monotheistic god, whereas with god most first think of plural as in scandinavian gods, greek, egyptian, etc...

yeah, its semantics, but in general, its better to be more acurate then assume it makes no diffrence.

When I read G/god, I just think of a diety. Plain and simple. Up there in the sky, chilling out on a cloud. It's usually what is said before/after that determines what god they're talking about.

"I love my God." vs "I love my God, even though he doesn't let me eat pork."

It really depends on who's reading it.

Hey, you're not supposed to begin a sentence with 'and' and you're supposed to capitalize every first letter of your sentences, Mr.I'm-grammatically-correct! :'D

i never said I type correctly;)
i just pointed out my opinion on god/God.

it is really subjective, yes. more religious ppl will read it and think of their diety while less religious ppl will read it more of a "general high powered being".

in retrospect, its not really much of an issue. i almost feel like a troll.
but i do like to be correct, especialy when regarding a "new" "religion".

I really don't think people will really think of their god when we say "Google is God". And really, I don't think enough people here care enough about the other religions if they feel that way! :'D I sure don't!
But I suppose I can kinda see what you're getting at...Either way, good luck on getting Matt to change it.

Hey, you're not supposed to begin a sentence with 'and' and you're supposed to capitalize every first letter of your sentences, Mr.I'm-grammatically-correct! :'D Technically, you can start a sentence with "And". They just tell you not to do that in elementary school because little 6 year olds would start every sentence with "And."

"I woke up at 8 o'clock
And then I ate my cereal
And then I got on the bus
and then...and then...and then."

But you can start with And. Just don't do it too often and only when it's merited.

The God vs god thing: I realize this is the internet, so I don't say anything. But there are times that I have to read the whole sentence/paragraph before I understand the use of 'god'. The capitalization can make a difference, especially if the rest of your grammar royally sucks.

The word "god" refers to a supernatural deity.
The word "God" refers to the Judaeo-Christian god.

Actually, it's mainly the English language which has this problem...
I never thought anything about this, cause in my language - as in many other European languages... which are actually pretty much Christian countries - all nouns are capitalized.
So as much as the Christians tend to think only of their own religion, when hearing god, most English-speakers don't think that there is another language or writing around :D

My personal opinion on the capitalisation of god:

god is a noun, describing an (imaginary) entity.
God is the name of a god, mostly used in monoteistic religions which only have one.

There's then a difference between saying "God doesn't like bananas" and "your god doesn't like bananas".

Considering the meaning of that sentence, I say it should be 'god'.

---

And, for the record, the Portuguese and Spanish languages offer the same problem.

This is absolutely correct, if you consider the grammar! I agree, if someone writes God, it must be a name, not the description.

A very good teacher I once had used to tell us the mnemonic sentence: "God is a god". See how it distinguishes between the name of a being and the concept of a god.

I would never write He/Him, because that capitalisation does not occur for any other name - and I don't believe he deserves any higher qualification than his capitalised name.

I think you write He/Him or She/Her when you are writing a religious text and you believe in his/her sacredness. Otherwise it's just annoying.

I only use He when I'm talking to some christian who is too stupid to realize who I'm talking about when I don't capitalize it....

Probably it's the most annoying language in grammar. But as far as I know is the Latin form of writing the only one with Capitalization. Arabic, Cyrillic, Chinese... they don't have this problem, either.

well slavic langauges dont capitalize nouns afaik;) (slovenian,croatian,polish,serbian,...)[just a memo to the whole german thingie]

but im glad to see that this whole god/God, Him/him, Her/her idea isnt so far out as i thought. and yeah, it depends highly on the context. as it was said, God usualy refers to the monotheistic idea of a god.

perhaps a poll would be in order?
is Google a God or a god?

ps, would starting a new topic with that poll be wrong since its basicly this topic, just in a form of a poll, or can i (dont know if im able to) edit the first post to be a poll?

So presumably goddess, due to the fact that God is a name, and there's no deity called Goddess. Matter solved. Giv prize plz.

To be honest, I'm a bit irritated on what god/goddess to worship.
There are so many: Google, FSM, even a teapot (no, wait, that was no god, it's just there...), and I also consider myself a goddess... being a demon and so...

So whom shall I worship? Myself? I'm confused...

Here's a helpful thought.

Why not get over trying to "diss" either your own, or another's traditional lame-ass, confusing, stupid, book-lead religion and just focus on positive things about sky daddies.

Like, why not refocus your negativity and turn it into creating a positive thing about your own viewpoint.

If it's atheism, then why is it a good thing to do, how does it help you, or not, etc.

Or, googlism....same idea, how does it help you cope, etc.?

Testimonials work for me, too.

Like did something happen and you looked and there she was, Google, and Google saved you, or...what's the positive story again?

I'm lost.

I need helping finding my way, sorta...try redirecting me, as if I had no faith at all.

I do that every day but the more wiser I become the more lost I am and I start questioning even my Agnostic status... Like my roommate is leaving I need to get a new one before august or I am fucked and other shit just keeps happening to me but I am more worried about others and the shit happening to them to focus on my shit... So my question lies in what is good from the sky daddie? Why does it feel I am all alone here or he is purposely mad at me?
