I used to not care, but after reading various people
protesting it, I've come to agree that it's not good.

Only the Admin or maybe a couple mods should have access to that kinda thing.

Why would it put me in a difficult position?

EDIT: Also, I still think every Googlist should be able to call themself a "Minister of Googlism"

You have flying monkfish? Quick, call the biologists: we need their cuttlefish now! (http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/cuttlefish.png) :D

Then again, this explains why everyone I know now has swine flu. >_>

Pollen levels for New York, NY today: Moderate. It wasn't that bad today. The guy was sitting in a room with no open windows.

In other news, two more New Yorkers with the flu died yesterday, albeit with other illnesses. Great.

I really don't see a problem with IP's being visible. Just don't spam, post porn or do other stupid shit, and you'll be fine. The whole internet is out there, that welcomes such content and bad taste, so I suggest spammers should take it elsewhere.
Apart from this, it would make people that are here just to offend others think a bit at least. It's not up to me, it's just a suggestion. I can understand it scares people, but it's for everybodys own good.

I can. Its most definitely against the sites terms of service and its possibly illegal. you cant even make people agree to it in the terms of the site so the first person who reg's and reports you, the site goes down.

I'm sure you can. However, there is nothing illegal about it.
First of all, IP addresses are a public domain. This means anyone can use them, for many purposes, depending on class, ISPs only rent certain groups (classes) form IEEE. Since you never signed a contract with IEEE, and you seem not to object to use of Internet via a valid IP address assigned to you by your ISP, you only use one public domain, just as you would use any public mean of transportation.
You can't ask a bus driver to take off license plates, just because you are riding in it. If you have an objection to use of Internet, well, don't use it. And before you reply, please consult the contract signed with your ISP, it's a good place to start when defining "illegal".
Making peoples IP visible is just as legal as hiding them. Furthermore, mods can see the addresses for all and every one of us. Since (as far as I know) they have no written contract for performing duties with site owner, and especially with IEEE, there is no reason why they should be the only ones able to see them. Some of the people you hang around here with, might even call this "rasist".
And as far as reporting goes, well, I hate to disappoint you but that's not the way it works. You can make a phony report to your ISP, safetent or whomever, but you need to follow certain procedure. You must supply logs, with exact times, type of offense etc. Most of 2nd class ISPs (ones that have no users, but rather only distribute links to other ISPs) will not even consides a complaint from an end user. And besides if the complaint turnes out to be bogus, there will be hell to pay for person that made it. So, I assure you, information regarding your IP is wary unlikely to me misused.

Daruko

Put up a poll, Djura. :D

No srsly, I think you'll lose by a landslide, but it might make an interesting debate topic. Apparently, there are a number of organizations who feel the way you do, and coercive findings have been published for and against.

My personal view is that the risks outway the benefits. I can't really even see the benefits, because we all have free speech here. We live in a world full of mudslinging and vitriol, whether one factors in anonymity or not. I don't walk around with my personal address, phone number, email, etc. stamped on my forehead, and if I did, it wouldn't make me a nicer person.

How would knowing anyone's IP help the non-mods on this site to have a more desirable experience? What could we do with that information, and when would you choose to do it? Have you considered the many ways in which others might choose to use it, and the scope of possible motive for abusing that information?

Publishing IPs, imho, is inviting anyone who has the will to not only troll the site, but stalk, steal information, compromise safety, and cause various other personal damages to members here, not necessarily even because they have thin skin, but because the opportunity is available. Also, because people with thin skin are more likely to try and cause harm with that information, and since no pursuit against liability from hatespeech or trolling will be effective in a public forum such as this, I fail to see anything positive that could result from publishing that information.

I think you're right about one thing though. It is perfectly legal to publish ppl's IPs on a forum, but I doubt many of our members here would like it.

No, IP's have nothing to do with identity theft, in majority of cases it's dumb passwords on public webmails that will get you in trouble. Just like any part of the world, states are no exception.

it would be fun if

Right on. Banning all the proxies would be next logical step. At least all the public ones.

Most of the IP's on the net can even be called static, due to the fact noone turns their router off. So, IP's stay the same for up to 6 months. If someone has a static IP, so what? My home IP is static, big deal.
If you are worried about identity theft, please explain how this is possible, with only info being somebodies IP. I've been doing sys administration for 10 years now, and I don't see a way how this could be done. If you are worried about attacks over the net, please think again. If somebody is going to do some damage, all he has to do is leave his hyena rootkit running for a week, scanning random IP's and ports for an idiot running pirated XP with no service pack, IE6, permanent connection and admin/admin user/pass on his home router.
Oh, and btw, you can see my IP, how's that anonymous?

I was thinking that and Brave New World when I read that statement.

IP's by them selves don't mean shit. No one can spy on you unless you have en IP camera with blank password set up in your bathroom, and nat setup on port 80. And I know this isn't gonna flow, not due to imaginary danger or paranoia, but basically because too many people here do things they aren't proud of.
My point is, you don't like spam or porn, do something abut is. You don't wanna show user ip's, fine, but at least ban all the proxies (use google for list), at least you will have less shit to clean up.
