Well it is remembrance day, please everyone, take the time to hold a minute of silence for those who died for our freedoms and countries. Try also to look into some of the stories from the wars if you get the time.

Try not to fight, etc. Make this a calm relaxed day.

agreed,
and it's valid even for one who lives in a country that actually was never part of "pacts", "alliances" or "axis".

Huh.
Could someone enlighten me, what was it about?

Remembrance, or Veterans Day when you're supposed the remember those who fought in the wars for your freedom.

The irony, I spent 6 hours taking a belt test for martial arts.

I don't know if that's so ironic, from what I understand a lot of martial arts stresses the importance of self defense and respecting others (ie, not randomly beating up people), which seems to be quite an appropriate sentiment.

Hence "martial ARTS".
Hand-to-hand tends to just incapacitating oponents in any way handy. (S`why they teach THAT in army, and not martial arts.)
And... Like, wrong season. 1 May is the day.

May 1st?
Remeberance day is the day that the (first?) World war stopped.

Second. And it`s 9 May, when Germany gave up.
First may is to honor the veterans, and ninth may is the day of parade.
Japany resisted till September, though.

But the treaty of Versailles was signed on November 11th, wasn't it? "The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month," or some such. And I believe it was the Great War, not WWII. VE and VJ days are other days.

It was created by King George the V of the UK in 1919. The date is the date the 1st World War ended but is today used as a day to remember ALL those who have died in battle, not just those from the major wars.

Funny, Americans would just call it Veterans day and have no idea about the date or "Remembrance Day." I actually forgot that today was Veterans Day, though I always knew about the eleventh day/eleventh month thing (or well, always since AP Euro in eleventh grade). I wouldn't have realized it until reading this thread. Even my calendar says:
"Veterans Day
Remembrance Day (Canada)"
I just noticed that now. How silly of us Americans.
Well, all towards the same end, I suppose.

Well, not here.
11 Nov isn`t holiday in Russia.
1/9 May is.

It is pretty much only us and Canada, not a holiday in Germany, Belgium. Apeldoorn NL does some stuff for Canada on the 11th and 12th.

It is not a holiday in OZ either, however, many people pause at 11-11-11 for a minutes silence (not much considering how many died). Combined with this are: wreath laying ceremonies in most cities and towns across the country and PLENTY of news coverage, on the first world war.
