Here are some of the best bands you're not listening to, probably--
Polaris/Miracle Legion (Polaris was pretty much Miracle Legion minus one guy, they did all of the music for the Nickelodeon show The Adventures of Pete & Pete.) They've since broken up, but the front man Mark Mulcahy is still making good music. Really mellow and pleasant acousticy alt-rock sort of sound. "Music From the Adventures of Pete and Pete" is the only Polaris album and it's good. "Pursuit of Your Happiness" by Mark Mulcahy is quite good, though not quite as perky and rhythmic as the former.
Carbon Leaf. Originally from Virginia (or somewhere in the southern US), I think they've been around for about 7 years now? Again mellow and acoustic, but also a bit of variety in instrumentation (mandolin, etc).
Anyway, I like to find out about new music. So plug your underrated bands here, recommend an album or two, etc.

I'd say Elvis Costello if you haven't heard his stuff... Let's see... That's about it for unknown.

Well...
L`Ame Immortelle, Erben Der Schopfung, Symphony-X, Dir En Grey, Alice In Videoland....
(Everything pretty hard on mind, so listen at your own risk.)
I can continue.

I <3 Elvis Costello--but not in large doses. I have all but the very latest albums, actually. My favorite has to be My Aim is True, though the one he did with the Vienna String Quartet is good too.

You might not think of them as underrated, they have had a lot of chart success, yet whenever i mention them the only response I seem to get is "Who?".

You'll definitely wnt to hear "King of America" and "When I was Cruel" then. The two greatest Costello albums in existence, sometimes nicknamed his marital angst albums.
