I read that the poor stingray felt "cornered" between the cameraman and the dearly (?) departed.

I guess my vet read the same story, 'coz when my dog felt cornered between him and the assistant this afternoon, you should'a seen 'im jump outta the way! Crikey!

Apparently it's the only time they attack. He was always harassing animals, they can all breathe a collective sigh of relief now....

I heard an interview this morning with a woman from the Discovery Channel. She said her 'production company' had the footage of the attack but wouldn't say whether they'd be showing it or not. As if they'd NOT show it, it's all about $$$. (That's if it's not on the net already - the corrupt Queensland police also have a copy. I doubt they'd do anything honourable with it.)

I am SICK to death of seeing threads, news segments, radio talkback etc. on how sad it is that he died and how bad it is for his family and crapping on like that. HE DIED. SHIT HAPPENS, and when you do what he does for a living, it happens with a lot higher frequency. Who wants to guess how many people died of starvation, bombs, were murdered, or just crashed their car and nobody so much as blinks. Sure, he helped good causes. Sure, some people liked his shows (I thought they were awful, mind). Sure, his family are sad... but you could say the same about just about any other death. The media attention focusing on his death is just pure ridiculous. I am sick of hearing about it, and I'm *also* sick of people telling me how sad it is, and how I'm so insensitive for saying otherwise. It is sad. But no more sad than any other dead.

Besides, he was dick.

The animals are not going to be sighing with releif. Irwin was a consevationalist. He captured those crocs to educate people about them and to relocate them to a safer location. Was his job dangerous? Yes. Was he an idiot? No. Is war-journalism dangerous? Yes. When a journalist in a war-zone gets shot or blow up do we say that it was because they were being idiots being there? No. Do not say the Irwin was an idiot. He fully knew the risks of his job, and he still performed his job with enthusiam and a passion, also really applied him self. He worked to protect animals from poaching and extinction. He was not just some inexperienced fool fighting crocs for the fun of the fight. He was not an idiot, you do not need to say so, show some respect. He just died.

Also, with regards to the video, if they show it, I will have seen the world sink to a new low when they need to see the footage of someone dying, for the sake of seeing it. I hope that that video is never released.

Whether or not he was an idiot is a matter of personal opinion. I reckon he had undiagnosed A.D.H.D. (shit the bloke couldn't sit still for two seconds)and several other mental health 'issues'. Whatever we think about him he was bloody well known, Globally!; just look at the press he is getting. I reckon that the daughter will have some major guilt issues to deal with in the future.
As for Queensland's 'finest'; well there not as publicly corrupt as they used to be (prior to the 'FitsGerald Inquiry') because no copper fancies going to visit all the lads they have locked up; and having to suffer the, horrors of, The Queensland Corrective Services Act' (not to mention 'Rum, Sodomy and the Lash [whops I just did]). Because of this it would take a really stupid 'Jack' to release that video; and risk being publicly executed.

:D Totally. The guy couldn't keep still.

And I think its sad that Steve died, rather ironically. But he made a living off poking crocodiles in the ass (and other animals). He got rich doing just that and he knew the risks. I'm just sitting here wondering what other Australian guy with take his place.

I still think he was an idiot. The Americans loved him because he stuffed around with dangerous animals that they don't have in their country.....and he was an Aussie. I bet if he was a Pom he wouldn't have been half as successful.

And I disagree that he helped conservation. He did the whole croc thing for money and notoriety. He harrassed them - moving them when unnecessary, chasing them down for the cameras. He was lauded for promoting Australia, but he was just promoting his 'wildlife park'. I didn't like the man at all.

His daughter is obviously being primed to step into his shoes. That's gonna be good - the kid has an American accent!!!! His son never seems to get a mention. Is there something wrong with him we don't know about?

Yes - he WAS an idiot, but he was my all Aussie idiot! He endeared himself to thousands of five year olds by out -crikying and "isn't she a beautying" them, said to great effect with bug eyes and alot of squirming. He was the poster child for ADD suffers world-wide and to be killed by one of the least dangerous Australian animals is kind of ironic.I think that anyone who made the pilgrammage to the gates of his Crocodile World Park on the Sunshine Coast in QLD is a bigger idiot though. One visitor interviewed outside the park
said that although she didn't know him or anyone remotely connected to his family, she felt gutted that he'd died!!Save your money lady, donate to the hundreds of orphans in Lebanon or somewhere like that where the innocents are really suffering.

I think the whole situation with the video is ironic. As a society we have become so accustomed to seeing death and violence on TV, but we are so removed from real death. I've seen dozens off people 'die' on TV or movies, probably just in the month, but I've never seen a dead body or anybody die in real life.

Personally, I'm fairly indifferent to if the video is released or not. I don't have any objection to it myself, but equally I can't think of any reason why it SHOUDL be released.

It's quite ridiculous - all the people going to pay homage at his zoo, all dressed in khaki. Even Naomi Robson was decked out in safari gear the other night. (She's a current affairs show presenter here in Oz, for you OS people. She made a name for herself at the Beaconsfield mine rescue when she arrived with her own makeup and wardrobe trailer). I left the room for a couple of minutes and when I came back she had a bloody lizard on her shoulder!!!

Have I missed something? Am I supposed to connect Naomi Robson with wildlife conservation or something???

Yep I agree with you Naomi is a camera slut who will do just about anything to keep her face on the idiot box. What I really loved about the whole carkey thing was it looked so fake. It was designer label and looked like it had just come from the shop. Personally I would like to see Her wrestling a couple of crocks; starting with a small one and working her way up until she struck one that tore her a new arsehole. Now THAT I would watch!

I, personally, stopped viewing Mr. Irwin as a smart animal show host when, in one episode, he had to get stitches when he was bit by a croc.

I beleive he was crouching next to it talking about how angry it was that he was in it's territory and that it may attack because it feels threatend.

He then got closer and stuck out his hand.

Robson spends night in Indonesian jail
Mark Forbes, Denpasar
September 14, 2006

THE host of Channel Seven's Today Tonight, Naomi Robson, spent last night in an Indonesian police cell after being apprehended while posing as a tourist in Papua.

Head of Indonesia's Foreign Ministry Imron Cotan confirmed that Ms Robson, along with a four-person television crew, was taken into police custody in the Papuan capital of Jayapura late last night.

"They are in police custody, where they will be held before being transported to Bali tomorrow and deported," he told The Age.

The five had breached Indonesian law by working as journalists after entering the province as tourists, Mr Cotan said.

For Robson, the trip to the troubled Indonesian province was a departure from the usual journalistic fare of shonky builders, miracle diets and feuding neighbours covered on her nightly current affairs program.

Last week she was criticised for donning a Steve Irwin-style khaki outfit to cover his death, even posing with a lizard on her arm.

In May, she reportedly had a van set up for her hair and make-up during the Beaconsfield mine collapse, something she denied.

But she did leave the story to attend the Logie awards.

With a heavy police, intelligence and military presence in Papua it is highly unlikely a five-person television crew could have operated without attracting the attention of authorities.

An Australian embassy spokesman said officials were making inquiries into the arrests.

Hehe, was there a reference to a certain souht park episode there? If not, i'l find the name of it and i recomend you watch it.

I agree with nameless ( i think) that there is so much focus around the media on such a single death, when there are far worse things around the world.

And to the comment on people ACTUALLY dieing on TV. This is how i felt aswell, and i still feel that people dieing should not be hidden from us. I remember though being shown the video of that guy who terrorists decapitated online some years ago, that haunted me to my very soul.

Whether i liked Steve Irwin as a person or not, he was a firm believer in evolution which was enough to piss off creationists. Check out this thread, which i find the most interesting ive found so far, and if you hate the site "answers in genesis" you should enjoy it. http://www.iidb.org/vbb/showthread.php?t=178390

Great news eh! Naomi will finally have a story that has some foundation of fact. Of course by the time she gets it to air fact will have been transformed into something entirely different! Apparently they were going to rescue some voodoo child who is so bad that the tribe has hired Jamie Oliver to be the guest chef at the 'eat a voodoo child' ceremony; apparently channel nine had paid the tribe to put Naomi on the menu however the wicked Indonesian government spoilt it with their diligence at the border.

Spears fly over 'cannibal' expedition

A SIX-YEAR-OLD boy called Wa-Wa from a Papuan tribe said to practise cannibalism has sparked an unholy row between channels Seven and Nine.

Naomi Robson and her Today Tonight film crew had flown to Papua to do a story on Wa-Wa, an orphan who was reportedly earmarked for a ritual killing. His story was first aired on 60 Minutes in May. But last night Robson and her crew were being deported from Indonesia after police had apprehended them for posing as tourists.

And Nine and Seven executives were waging an extraordinary war of words over Robson's aborted mission, with Nine declaring it would take legal action over claims it had sabotaged Seven's story.

Mission aborted: a tight-lipped Naomi Robson arrives at Jakarta airport late last night. She is to be deported from Indonesia today.

Of course he wasn't an idiot. This poll is an insult to his memory. He was trained, he knew what he was doing with all the crocs, snakes, and what have you. He did so much for the conservation of wildlife. I'm not even going to get into it, all his accomplishments would take too long to list, and I don't feel like compiling them. Just do some research before you make polls like this. Its really idiotic on your part, unless your intention was to make yourself look stupid. If thats the case, your thread succeeded.

Idiot is probably the wrong choice of words.

We need to be able to study animal behavior, he gave us
that up close and personal viewpoint and was well trained.

Often animals are not treated right in these cases, especially for TV. There should be stricter laws there to protect them.

We have jails called zoos where thousands of people view and "learn" about animals. Animals are not too happy about it, generally speaking, but they maybe save wildlife by helping us educate future generations and help us to appreciate their worth.

Our aquarium is supreme, and of the highest state possible. The sharks probably still do not get what they would get in the ocean, right?

So the few suffer for the benefit of millions of beings.

He's aight, leave him in peace, he did the best he could, I'm sure, and must've been a huge fan of the beasts he worked with.

It was dangerous, and he knew it, that is probably what drew him to the profession in the first place.

Yippee - ti - yi - yo.
