Is religion offensive?

Do you think religious teachings and beliefs are offensive to the individual? I think they can be.

For example, say you were a TEE student, and your religious friend offered to pray for you to get good results. Is this not offensive? He is effectively saying you are unable to get the results yourself, and that you'll only get them if god is feeling particularly inclined towards you.

This line of thinking - and indeed, the concept of God in general - implies that achievements you may or may not succeed in are largely down to God, and not yourself, which many might find rather offensive. You do not do well in the TEE because God loves you. You do well because you have put in the effort, studied hard and applied yourself. The concept of God would discount this effort.

I won't say i'm easily offended, I'm more likely to be annoyed than anything, but I find the way Christians in particular try and "save you" when they find out you don't believe in god to be highly offensive.

Also, intellecutally, I find religion stopping the persuit of science, (stem cell research), or stopping the well-being of others (abortions, wars) to be very offensive.

But that's ok, I've been known to wear pentagrams and upside down crosses just to get a rise out of them, myself. It all comes full circle. ^_^

Hehe I also tent to play Cradle of Filth really loud to piss em off... one line stands out in that song it is the only very clear line 'CHRIST CANNOT SAVE!!!!!' or Slayer for the line 'PRAISE, HAIL SATAN!'' but then again, I am a jerk about getting religion crammed down my throat. I find the pentagrams and the satanic crosses to be getting overly cliche.

Most ideals tied into religion have good motives behind them, however most religions abuse the fuck out of their "gospel"
