Just finished a Micheal Crichton, State of Fear
good read, although the protaganists do miracuosly survive
some pushing the envelope of belief situations,
but some of the points he makes on global warming or lack thereof
are pretty thought provoking,
the bibliography is amazing, I checked all references and they are valid
theres a section at the end of the book with his personal opinions
on both Global Warming
and what I consider more important
Scientific Research Funding and how it skews results
the 3 sections after the novel were actually better than the novel
which apparently was just a vehicle to get his thought provoking ideas out there

anybody else read it?
is Global Warming for real? or just another fearmonger to keep our eyes off real issues?

i haven't read that book but IMHO

-global warming is real (a small measurable amount)
-man being the cause is debatable and gets used for political agendas (and profiteering)
-rapid global warming is very debatable and used for fear mongering
-the amount the earth will warm in the future is debatable
- research funding (how its done) is causing junk science
- media hype is promoting junk science, political agendas, fear mongering and profiteering
- its worth studying and doing solid sound scientific research on, to try to understand how warming and cooling cycles really work

those were exactly the points he made in his personal opinions
and in the novel itself, the bibliography used gov't data to back it up
a specific case was World Temperature data taken for the
Goddard Institute for Space Studies, Columbia University NY
the URL http://www.giss.nasa.gov/data/update/gistemp/station/data/
with the note, "shortly after the hardcover publication of this book, GISS
changed its website to show less data. The station data no longer goes back before
1880, and thus heightens the appearance of a steady rise in temperature."
I smell an agenda

two agendas that seem likely are economic and profit,

-if we go hyper environmental and the developing world (3rd world) doesn't have to, the jobs and the world economy shift and the west is no longer a dominant power there are undoubtedly a bunch of people/nations/United Nations that would love to see this happen

-profit... the money from green credits, countless products and changes to infrastructure are worth $$$$$$ guaranteed the big pushers of fear are in line to make money from all the things we need to do to "save ourselves from the coming disaster"

not to mention all the new gov't agencies with bloated budgets
and all the new industries (already in place by old industry)
just needing a way to force high dollar changes on us that we
don't want need or desire.
California has been leading the way in environmental legislation
since the 70's, hasn't done anything to cut down on anything
just keeps the cost of everything higher
no matter how many laws, mandates & regulations they pass
theres still smog, pollution etc
I still think unleaded gas was bs although studies were done
by the auto & oil industries, any minor gains in actual pollutants
out of the tail pipe, were offset by the reduction in both mpg and engine wear

its all agenda driven, even the environmentalists need the fear to keep themselves in business, as long as their preaching death and destruction they don't have to get real jobs,
and one of my biggest pet peeves is the richest people are the most vocal and the biggest polluters, (same goes for others like Bono and his Darfur crap, you've got all the money why don't you buy them some food?), everybody wants everybody else to make the sacrifices, Obama wants a smaller carbon footprint, but it took 2 seperate full size jets to get him and his family to beg for the Olympics, oh, and one for D'oprah that in itself wasted more rescources and polluted more than I will in my lifetime.

Will.

I'm awed by the fact that you even remotely consider something as well documented & widespeadly accepted as global warming to be anything less than a pretty serious & definitely real threat to not only our society, but the entire planet, and countless future generations.

Silent spring by rachel carson is one of those seminal texts on environmental woes, c. 1960s.
As is well...um, my fav candidate Al Gore.

Just fucking someone elses thread now.

I read silent spring in 1967,
when they taught us in school
about the coming Ice Age
and I'm not suprised that
you take on total faith
every new fad belief
that comes along
