in the first story, religion is downplayed and probably not a motivating factor as the man is sick, in the second their is outrage over the religion being a factor, Political Correctness at its finest.
Story 1 (http://www.star-telegram.com/1066/story/1743689.html)
Story 2 (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8354963.stm)
this is whats known as a media bias
like when an Illegal Alien becomes an Undocumented Migrant
if it looks like a duck.....

oh look, (http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/11/11/texas.fort.hood.investigation/)
he's not a terrorist
and ideology had nothing to do with it,
he was a normal American mass murderer

Tag you might this post interesting (it also links back to the original post): http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2009/11/cfi_on_the_fort_hood_murders.php#comments
I agree that his religion probably had something to do w/ the shootings, but due to this notion of political correctness and "we don't want to hurt anybody's feelings" this is being underplayed. Look, there are definitely Muslims out there who are religious extremists. Just as there are Christians (or Jews, or Hindus, etc.) who are extremists. But to say that his religion had nothing to do w/ because we have to take care not to upset a group of people ignores the fact that Islamic extremism is playing a role in modern politics and warfare.

muslims openly state that they want a world under sharia law
and they don't mind killing anyone who disagrees with them
nobody yells "Dalai" before a mass murder, nobody commits
suicide in a crowd of innocents waving a communion wafer, I see a
difference in them, if they don't want to be judged on their
religion, then they should handle it in house and get rid of all
the hate mongering Imams, they always claim those are a fringe
group of extremists, fine, that means the rest of you have them
outnumbered, get rid of them, shut them up, excommunicate them,
stop giving them your money to buy weapons...
I would have said the same thing about catholics and protestants in
Ireland, but they finally seem to be working it out. They were just
as stupid and rightfully shunned in the 60's and 70's, both sides were
idiots, both sides killed civilians and both sides realized it wasn't getting
them anywhere...just ruining the country they claimed to be fighting for..
anyway... if it looks like a duck and yells allah u akbar, shoot first.

I'd say it was the psychiatry that sent him mad.
How the hell can you function as a normal person when you spend all of your days listening to fruit-loops?
Will.
