My solution to drop the big one on every maudit franco-separatist would not be helpful, however tempting. :(
I don't know much about the Basque's beef, but this sort of terrorism scares the crap out of me. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Front_de_lib%C3%A9ration_du_Qu%C3%A9bec)

you honestly think the Quebecois separatists are either terrorists or scary?
jesus, come to coastal Maine in the summer. You'll learn all about why not to be afraid of Quebecois ever competently accomplishing anything, ever.
I think the ETA is kind of the same deal. Mostly interested in publicity so their financial supporters won't forget to donate to "the cause". It has been a long-standing policy of the ETA to call a building and announce that it is about to be bombed far enough in advance to allow for evacuation and lack of human casualties. That one guy they killed a year or two ago was an accident, he apparently never got the word about the bombing.
The only solution to the Basque separatists, as I see it, is to let the "leadership" (I use the term lightly) grow old and die. There won't be enough of the following generation interested in carrying the torch to keep the operation going. The kids are more interested in facebook, iPods, la liga, and getting laid than they are in ethno-national identity politics, which they likely (and rightly) view as being a dinosaur.
I think the Quebec separatist movement is also a dinosaur. There's no economic or political advantage to be had by separating from Canada, and everyone in power knows it. I think it occasionally gets dragged out of the dustbin and paraded around when the PQ leadership needs something to distract people from the loss of the industrial base (and accompanying loss of jobs) and the inevitable movement of demographic and cultural power from PQ and ON west towards BC and Alberta.
in short, much ado about nothing.
However, if I'm dead wrong and Quebec ever does separate from Canada, I demand that they be forced to take New Brunswick with them.

totally concur on quebec,
that was being facetious
as to ETA,
I think to a certain extent your right about the old guard
passing on and nobody wanting to pick up the torch
but in the meantime they are still dangerous,
not on the same level as most other terrorist groups
but they are capable of violence just smart enough to
know that in large quantities it hurts the cause
whereas the level they are sustaining now keeps
them in the news without anyone calling for massive retaliation

Not all are like that. It's people like Villeneuve (http://www.montrealmirror.com/ARCHIVES/1997/103097/cover.html)who advocate violence against non-francophones who scare me.

I agree and wish to add that the possibility of exploitation of their own children does exist. As long as there is passion that feeds the cause, there will always be a new generation to carry that torch

No, I'm from Maine, otherwise known as the "Quebecois Riviera".
