Default Good job, Canadia.

It's incredible. Your prime minister has actually just usurped your government. Congrats. Stephen Harper has just shut down the Parliament in Canadia until January 26. I reckon that this is the first time an executive branch has shut down a legislative branch since King Louis XIV in France closed down the Estates-General in 1618. The Estates-General remained closed until 1789.

See you in 2179, Canadian Parliament.

Well, this is good and bad.

Bad because we have no government.

Good because the coalition that had formed was, essentially, trying to get Stephen Harper out of the Prime Minister's office without an election, led by a guy who is supposed to step down as leader of the Liberal party in May.

Basically, we had no government before this happened. To prorogue Parliament just makes that observation explicit.
...
I wish Trudeau wasn't dead.

Edit: Sorry - technically, we still have a government, just no Parliament. The governor general had two choices - either do what she did, or order another election. If she had done the latter, the Liberal Party of Canada would not have any representatives in Parliament.

If you want to know what political suicide is...

The earliest one that comes to mind is , er, Tsar Nicholas the Second's shutting down of the Russian Duma.

And look how that turned out.

Wasn't that after King Charles I of England sent off Parliament for 100 years?

That was the 1600's, and resulted in the English Civil War, which resulted in "The English Protectorate", a de facto dictatorship lead by Oliver Cromwell.

Nicholas the II dissolved the Duma multiple times, and that lead to the February Revolution, which in tuen led to the October Revolution, which led to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the world's first Communist state.

Update: Stephane Dion, leader of the Liberal Party and would-be Prime Minister if the coalition actually went through with their plan, resigned yesterday.

Our politics just sank in an ice-fishing hole.

What does that mean for Canada, and the left in general? Also, what's the origins of the conflict?
